That's right, a year ago today was the onset of the phenomenon that is The Circus of Dr. Lou (had Amy not pointed this out only a week ago, I would have never known). Still, respects must be paid.
Truthfully, only a handful of people know the origin of the phrase, "The Circus of Dr. Lou." No, it is not some random words strung together to sound funny. Many people have asked, and I have always declined an answer, but now you shall hear the truth.
In the last episode of Mystery Science Theater that Joel Robinson is the host of ("Mitchell," one of the most memorable episodes of all-time), he is jettisoned from the ship by Gypsy Rose who has mistakenly attempted to save his life. Joel leaves behind an audio plaque by which the bots can always remember him. His farewell comment is thus:
"To all on the Satellite of Love, from Joel: the whole world is a circus if you look at it the right way. Everytime you pick up a handful of dust and see not the dust but a mystery, a marvel there in your hand. Everytime you stop and think 'I'm alive and being alive is fantastic.' Everytime such a thing happens, you are a part of the circus of Dr. Lou."
P.S. I've always wondered about the origin of this quote; I have never found any pertinent information on the internet. How ironic, on its one-year anniversary, I find I've been spelling the name wrong. The quote is from a 1964 film directed by George Pal, "The Seven Faces of Dr. Lao." I've read some articles proclaiming that the actual pronounciation is like "Louse" minus the "-se". Someone specifically mentioned Joel mispronouncing it "Loo," and thus explains my old spelling of it. Though I don't want to go against my hero, in the interest of historical accuracy, I am hereby changing the title to its rightful spelling.
(The film, "The Seven Faces of Dr. Lao" stars pre-"Odd Couple" Tony Randal and pre-"I Dream of Jeanie" Barbra Eden. Many express this is the finest performance by Randal--Amy, you might want to check it out!)

'appy Birthday, there Dr. Lao (belated.) I am so glad you finally unveiled the secret behind that title! My curious mind was about to get the best of me.
"Curiosity killed the cat, you know?"
"I know!"
Toadal Recall, I think, was my favorite too. So informative, so clever, so funny. Also, any story with frogs gettin' squished is OK in my books. Did you catch that?
