I've always assumed the developers of the game had a good reason for making the Tecmo football field so grossly misproportional to the dimensions of a standard football field, be it for technical reasons or, as I like to believe (and much less likely), they foresaw its necessity to maintain the quiddity of its future acclaimed gameplay. 
According to my calculations—assuming they scaled with width of the field correctly at 53 1/3 yards, the Tecmo Field is roughly 316 yards long. Given the size of the players, however, it seems the field is more accurately scaled in length—assuming the field is 120 yards from the back of one end zone to another, the playing area is a sickly 20 yards wide.***
